Developing Youth through Television
  Updated @ 14:12:07
Families have had rituals of sitting together in front of the telly for that one show that gripped the hearts of many across the country. Those well-thought of shows of the past have now long become a history as television now teaches violence and unacceptable forms of behavior, all in the name of entertainment

Since time immemorial, amazing inventions have been made by great minds to make this world a better place to live in and our lives much simplified than before. John Logie Baird’s invention of the first ever working television in 1925 opened up an entirely new communication medium to share thoughts, news and entertainment. Since its invention, television is now considered a necessity in every household even is a tiny village in a vast developing country.

Families have had rituals of sitting together in front of the telly for that one show that gripped the hearts of many across the country. Those well-thought of shows of the past have now long become a history as television now teaches violence and unacceptable forms of behavior, all in the name of entertainment.

With a plethora of television channels, today’s youth is exposed to all sorts of information at a simple click of a button. Youngsters are increasingly becoming couch potatoes and adopting an unhealthy lifestyle as they waste their lives lazing in front of the television watching meaningless shows, and movies.

Beyond doubt, television has a potential to isolate people, promote violent behaviors and stigmatize people as social outcasts. But it also has the power to unite communities, provide useful information, dissolves boundaries by offering world news and promotes cultural and social changes. Parents should make sure that the youth of today sees television as a powerful educational tool that has the ability to inspire and inform youth.

The youth mostly sees television as an entertainment platform. It is the responsibility of the parents to make their children realize that it can be an important educational tool capable of assisting children’s intellectual development. Educational programs such as those dealing with how processes and systems relating to different aspects of life, nature, inventions, and discoveries work make youth aware of how far we have come in knowledge and wisdom levels since the inception of human race.

Another positive impact of television is that it has resulted in a global village. The youth can have a grip on what is happening around the world sitting right in front of the television in the comfort of their homes. The social and political impact of news channels has increased awareness of political systems, and rights and responsibility. Youth can be aware of consumer rights and move towards global diversity and harmony.

The music industry and other entertainment programs have also created a cultural impact on the youth. Youth can learn about their culture as well as be exposed to other cultures from around the world. Moreover, it is an emotional art form that depicts every kind of emotion. Music can bring about like minded souls together who share common interests.

Whether your child is a two-year old or a college-goer, television can offer much more than you can imagine. The key is being exposed to the positive side and using it as a learning and skill development tool. TV can be an excellent entertainer as well as an educator.
